Collective Soul rocks a sold-out show Saturday night
Collective Soul proved even after sixteen years in the music industry they still have what it takes to sell out and put on one heck of a show. The Georgia based Alternative rockers, who are currently on tour in support of their 2009 Self-title release, performed for the crowd of nearly one thousand at Northern Lights Casino in Walker, MN on Saturday night. I was initially hesitant about the venue upon walking in as it was merely a conference center with rows of chairs set up. To my surprise it actually turned out to be a much better then I had anticipated. A solid sound system and an above average lights display (especially for a venue of its size) made for a quality show.
Collective Soul kicked off the show appropriately with “Welcome All Again” a track off their most recent Roadrunner Records self-titled released (The band has a prior self-titled album on Atlantic Records). Performing several songs from the recent release as well as their extensive past catalog of music the band shined with solid vocals and their trademark guitar driven rock. The crowd initially seemed a bit lackluster sitting down for the first half of the show (which I found a bit unusual for a rock show) but as soon as the band started their 1994 hit “Shine” everything changed. The crowd was fired up and rocked out with the band on a variety of hits including “The World I Know” and the new “Staring Down.” At one point in the evening frontman Ed Roland brought up the snowmobiles he’d seen from his hotel window asking the crowd how fast they actually go. The crowd shouted speeds in excess of 80mph. “Ya’all are out of your damn mind” Roland quipped. He then asked his band if any of them had ever been on a one. Dean spoke up that he had been on one up in Canada; much to the crowds delight.
Before going into “Hollywood,” Roland explained that the song had been written while they were on tour with Metallica and that it was a tribute to the many great bands of the 80’s. The evening ended with “Run” and concluding with just Roland on an acoustic guitar, and the crowd singing, “I’ve got a long way to run.” With moves better then rockers half his age Roland & Co. gave the crowd what they came for, an incredible night of rock and roll.
